CBD Signage

INTERIM REPORT 1/7/10

CURRENT POSITION
At the public forum on 18th June 2010 the matter of inadequate/insufficient signage to direct visitors to Cooma to off main street parking and tourist places of interest was raised. It was seen as important on the premise that it was essential information to enable visitors to utilise the services of the CBD area.

COMMITTEE REPORT
The committee inspected the northern, southern and western approaches to Cooma and found that there was some substance to the concerns.
1. There is existing signage which does give the required information.

2. The existing signage, howerver, is not of a consistent nature and in some cases of inadequate sizing or obscured by vegetation.

3. The committee drew up a ' wish list ' of possible improvements and held a meeting with Council senior staff to determine what was possible within regulatory requirements.

4. The committee was very well received by the Council staff who were well aware of the problem and are, in fact, in an advanced stage of planning for the rectification of the issue.

5. There are a number of constraints placed on highway signage with the RTA having ultimate say on location, size and colour.

6. There were no areas of disagreement between Council and the Committee.

RECOMMENDED ACTION

1. That the committee continues to receive proposals from the community.

2. Council has already provided the Committee with some detail of its proposed changes and further consultation with Council should occur as issues arise.

We welcome your comments or suggestions.

August 2011
It is now 12 months since the committee met with the Council staff.
Is it time to revisit them for an update of what has been achieved in that time?
